The Psalms are ordered the way they are for a reason. There is a rhythm to life that the Psalms capture and the pairing of Psalms 4 & 5 are a good example of this.
For most of us, our day begins sometime around the rising of the sun, but for the Israelite people the day began with evening. Our first indication of this is found in Genesis 1. The creation story follows the rhythmic pattern of 6 days and each event concludes with "And there was evening, and there was morning, the first (and second, third and so on) day." The passover story in Exodus 12 contains other evening>morning examples. Psalms 4 & 5 guide us through evening to morning and the rhythm of the day. They are reminders that a godly life is to be lived out on a daily basis and not simply the result of a one-time decision.
Psalm 4 is a beautiful prayer of transformation. As we leave the chaos of a hectic day we are invited to peace through God. This psalm has brought me great comfort at the end of many crazy days and reminds me there is only one God and he is in control. There is nothing to be afraid of.
004 I Will Lie Down
At the falling of the day
O Lord, hear me as I pray
How I need your sweet relief
I need your mercy and your peace
Turning glory into shame
Your god has another name
Know the Lord has set apart
The godly and the true of heart
I will lie down and sleep in peace
For you, O Lord, have rescued me
You filled my heart with greater joy
Than their vanities afford, for you alone are Lord
You alone are Lord
In your anger do not sin
Search your heart and look within
Who can show us what is right?
O Lord, shine upon us light
I will lie down and sleep in peace
For you, O Lord, have rescued me
You filled my heart with greater joy
Than their vanities afford, for you alone are Lord
You alone are Lord
